In 2020, artists Paris Díaz and Gerardo Nolasco-Rózsás were working on their piece Cartography of the Stain, when they identified a peculiar object: a New Fossil. This object fascinated them in such a way that the artists decided to immortalize it to transcend the images captured for that first artwork. The object became the subject of their next artwork piece. It turned into a sculpture, which was exhibited in 2021 and included an Augmented Reality feature that could be accessed using the artwork as a digital marker. The artwork works as a bridge to connect physical and digital scenes, inviting the viewers to reflect about what is the mark that humanity is leaving on the world as new fossils.
New Fossils 3.0 | Specimen No. 1 is an update of the 2021 artwork, which not only includes the AR feature, but also a digital portal through which the audience can access in real time the UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts Guadalajara, in Mexico. With this new edition the artists get to present an artwork that can be updated and reflect the changing reality in a given time; reminding us that we must keep thinking about what is the footprint of today to tomorrow’s humanity.
