Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe University of Music focuses on music and media from both an artistic and scientific perspective. It incorporates the Landeszentrum für Musikjournalismus und Musikinformatik, the Institut für Musikinformatik und Musikwissenschaft, the Institut für Neue Musik und Medien and the ComputerStudio.

It reflects on and actively shapes the relationship between music, computers and humans, examining in particular the myriad of ways in which people deal with music in our digitalized world. The University engages with current technologies by way of practical realization, scientific investigation, theoretical reflection and artistic articulation. Its ComputerStudio was founded in 1991 as part of the inauguration of the ZKM and Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) with the aim of combining musical practice with current media technologies in an academic environment. Having acquired an impressive range of facilities and technical equipment over the years, the studio today offers comprehensive possibilities for the artistic use of technologies such as 3D audio, motion tracking and virtual reality.

Overall, artistic production, research and teaching at Karlsruhe University of Music are dedicated to the development and design of immersive 3D environments, augmented musical instruments and interfaces based on current sensor technologies, AI-based music generation, composition and performance practice of electronic music and computer music, live coding, as well as computer-aided composition for film, theater, computer games and media.
