The CULT maps are here! Experience media art itineraries from April 2026

27. April 2026

The newly developed printed maps for the media art routes of the international exchange project CULT are now available. Provided free of charge at institutions in Karlsruhe, they invite you to explore media art in the urban landscape whilst opening up new perspectives on locations in Karlsruhe and Modena.

The maps are the visible result of an intensive and vibrant exchange between the UNESCO Media Art Cities of Karlsruhe and Modena. They were created as part of the CULT project, which ran from October 2024 to September 2025, was co-funded by the European Union, and links cultural heritage with media art whilst providing impetus for a shared European identity.

In spring 2025, 25 citizens, artists and creative professionals from each city came together. Following the visit by the Karlsruhe group to Modena in April, the participants from Modena made a return visit to Karlsruhe in May. Through workshops, discussions and joint city explorations, the groups developed ideas on how media art can be experienced and made accessible in urban spaces – and ultimately translated these into specific itineraries.

A key objective of the project was to create a tangible outcome that would have a lasting impact beyond the project’s duration and remain of lasting benefit to both the local community and visitors. The map fulfils this aim precisely: it makes media art visible within the urban landscape and encourages independent exploration. The external perspective is particularly enriching: seeing which places are relevant to the guests from Modena, and in turn bringing this perspective back to their own city.

The CULT maps present a curated selection of cultural sites in Karlsruhe and Modena, offer a suggested route for orientation, and at the same time allow users to add their own stops. A detailed and expanded version of the map is also available online – easily accessible via a QR code on the map.

The maps are available at the ZKM | Centre for Art and Media, the Badischer Kunstverein, the Kinemathek Karlsruhe, at Baden States Theatre and the Karlsruhe Tourist Information, amongst other places.
