Jury selection for the 2023 project funding programme for media art.
After intensive examination and discussion, the expert jury selected nine outstanding projects from a total of 45 submissions, some of which will be presented to the public in the city of Karlsruhe in summer 2024 alongside the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE. The funded projects range from interdisciplinary performances and participatory mediation formats to impressive projections in public spaces and collaborative international artist tandems. The artistic positions reflect profound themes such as sustainability, the interaction between humans and nature, gender equality and the impactful representation of marginalised perspectives. The two international network projects, which aim to promote exchange and collaboration in the field of media art on a global level, are also particularly noteworthy.
Head of the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Karlsruhe Dominika Szope emphasises the diversity and uniqueness of this year’s submissions: “The significant and multifaceted media art scene in Karlsruhe is reflected in the abundance and diversity of the projects – not only from well-established artists, but also from young creatives. Now in its fourth year, we are delighted to be part of this extraordinary artistic production and to be able to continue supporting exciting media art projects that not only promote the local art scene, but also the networking with our international partners in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.”
Artists and creative professionals from Karlsruhe had the opportunity to apply for funding until September 29, 2023. A total of 100,000 euros has been made available in the 2023 budget to support innovative media art projects that reflect social issues, create new perspectives in urban spaces and enrich media art in Karlsruhe. Most of the projects will be presented as part of the barrier- and admission-free exhibition Media Art is Here in summer, which will run for four weeks alongside the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival. The exhibition will enable even more people to experience the interdisciplinary world of media art.
The expert jury, chaired by Dominika Szope, included Prof. Filipa César (Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design), Anja Casser (Director of the Baden Art Association), Philipp Ziegler (Head of the Curatorial Department ZKM I Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe), Prof. Marijke van Warmerdam (State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe) and Daniela Burkhardt (Executive Coordinator UNESCO City of Media Arts I Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Karlsruhe).
