From February 17 to 19, Karlsruhe’s partner city Timisoara celebrates the Opening as European Capital of Culture 2023
From February 17 to 19, Timisoara celebrates its launch as 2023 European Capital of Culture with an extensive cultural programme. Karlsruhe, as Timisoara’s long-standing partner city, will be involved in a variety of joint activities and will present itself as a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts with current media art projects. At the opening weekend, the impressive video installation BALLET OF THE CITIES by Karlsruhe media artist Jonas Denzel will be on view in the public urban space of Timisoara. Karlsruhe Lord Mayor Dr. Frank Mentrup: “Overcoming borders, exchanging ideas, and working together is very important to us as an internationally networked city. In this context, our partnership with Timisoara, which goes back more than 30 years, is of particular importance for the cultural dialogue between our cities. It is therefore a great honor and special pleasure for us to be present when media art from our city radiates to Timisoara and the world!”. A delegation from Karlsruhe led by Lord Mayor Dr. Frank Mentrup will travel to Timisoara for the opening of the celebrations to mark its year as European Capital of Culture 2023.
On three consecutive evenings from February 17 to 19, 2023, Jonas Denzel will stage choreographed dance scenes on buildings using the beambike, an electric cargo bike equipped with mobile projection technology. Through the projections, the dancers literally merge with the buildings and bring them to life. Taller than lifesize, they explore the National Theatre and Opera House, balancing on window frames at Union Square and scaling the facade of a historic hospital in the city centre. “Media art and dance combine in BALLET OF THE CITIES to create a universal form of expression in urban space that needs no words to reach people”, says artist Jonas Denzel. The ballet choreographies were created in co-production with the ballet ensemble of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and each one is precisely adapted to the architecture at the particular location. Part of the installation is the art project beambike, which the artist uses to make art in public spaces experienceable in a sustainable way.
