Art, culture, media art and creativity will form a symbiotic partnership at this year’s art KARLSRUHE, merging into a cultural marketplave of artistic creation. From February 22 to 25, the international art scene will come together at art KARLSRUHE, one of the most important platforms for classic modern and contemporary art. The UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts Karlsruhe will present itself in the Karlsruhe exhibition halls in cooperation with ZKM | Karlsruhe and Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) in a joint area in hall 3, which is dedicated to the theme of “artication” (art + education). The UNESCO City of Media Arts and its cooperation partners will be showcasing impressive works of media art that convey a diverse spectrum of artistic creativity in Karlsruhe and beyond.

A special feature this year is that the area of the marketplace will be designed with works by students and alumni of the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) and with works by world-famous artists from the ZKM | Karlsruhe collection. This will highlight the importance of the two institutions, whose achievements have made a major contribution to the preservation of the title “UNESCO City of Media Arts”. Furthermore, the scenography of the marketplace and the accompanying booklet will be designed by students of the HfG.

In total, seven artistic works will be shown as part of the city’s presence as well as information on the city of culture and media art. The works, which are presented under the title Hybrid Echoes, reflect the diverse possibilities of media art and build bridges between art, science and technology. The title refers directly to the attitude to life of the current generation of students, which, then as now, is formed from diverse influences. The “hybrid” represents the different connections of the self that observe and artistically reflect contemporary society. The new generation of female artists is complemented by historical video works – which can be understood as echoes of a previous generation of female artists – that also deal with the theme of identity in the middle of a modern media world. Participating artists: Luise Peschko (HfG), Miki Feller (HfG), Yuliana Mosheeva (HfG), Nina Sobell (ZKM), Piplotti Rist (ZKM), Dara Birnbaum (ZKM).

In addition, the UNESCO City of Media Arts will present its own work of art: Greetings from the Black Forest by artist collective Francis Karat. The work consists of postcards that are set in motion with image-to-video AI tools and are provided with additional sound design.

Another event that will take place as part of this year’s art KARLSRUHE is Kunstrauschen Karlsruhe. On Friday, February 23, the project spaces and off-spaces of the independent scene will open their doors and invite visitors to discover their spaces after visiting art KARLSRUHE. Visitors can expect vernissages with expansive installations, sculptural explorations with delicate glass blowing, video works, musical and media art experiments and much more. In addition, a special exhibition shuttle has been set up for the evening, which will travel to various destinations in the city and transport visitors to the various project spaces.

The collective presentation is supported by a strong network and partnerships that have formed around our UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts.
