Johanna Wagner completed their artistic education at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe: Wagner, who was born in 1983 in Burglengenfeld, Germany, studied at the arts academy from 2008 to 2014 with professors Corinne Wasmuht and John Bock, before going on to complete her master’s with Prof. Wasmuht in 2015.
In 2020 Johanna Wagner was awarded, together with the artist Ulrich Okujeni, with the cultural fellowship worth 20,000 euros. Every two years the Karlsruher Kulturstipendium (Karlsruhe Cultural Fellowship) is awarded, in rotation, to graduates of the three arts academies in Karlsruhe: the University of Music, the State Academy of Fine Arts, and the University of Arts and Design (HfG). The fellows are selected based on recommendations from their respective institutions. The aim of this funding – according to the Karlsruhe Kulturamt (Cultural Office) – is to provide the artists and musicians with the opportunity to continue to make work in Karlsruhe after completing their studies, to forge a stronger connection between the city and the arts academies, and to cement Karlsruhe’s reputation as a city of the arts.
