Open Call: The Future is Today

17. June 2024 — 09. September 2024

In 2023, Karlsruhe’s art and cultural institutions jointly presented themselves for the first time in their own space at art KARLSRUHE. With media art at the core of the space – as the nucleus of the identity of the city of Karlsruhe – selected media art works from the UNESCO project funding program of the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Karlsruhe as well as works curated by the ZKM | Center for Art and Media have been on display in this space over the past two years.

From February 20 to 23, 2025, art KARLSRUHE will once again be held in the UNESCO City of Media Arts Karlsruhe. Under the motto The Future is Today, the UNESCO City of Media Arts office invites artists and artist groups to submit project proposals for a media artwork to be exhibited centrally in the aforementioned area as part of art KARLSRUHE 2025. The aim is to create an image-rich, interactive media artwork that primarily deals with the question of what we can do today to shape the future in a forward-looking and sustainable way. How should society deal in a meaningful and creative way with current technological and social developments that are increasingly influencing our living and working environment and making it more complex? The Future is Today – how can the world we shape today reflect the future?

Following the presentation at art KARLSRUHE, further presentations of the installation are planned as part of the exhibition format Media art is here in the summer of 2025 by the UNESCO City of Media Arts in Karlsruhe.

The selected project is being realized with the kind support of the Werner-Stober Foundation.

Participation
Applications are open to professional media artists from Karlsruhe and the region. Applications are possible for individuals and artist groups. Excluded are works that are produced as part of a school or university education (e.g. term papers or final theses), as well as projects that have already been realized. We welcome applications from all people, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, cultural, ethnic and social background.

Grant
The selected artist will receive a grant of 10,000 € for the realization of the project. The artist’s fee will be covered seperately.

Requirements for the artwork
The idea is to create an image-rich, interactive media artwork. Media arts in the sense of the open call include all artistic expressions that are created, presented or used with the use of technological means.

Due to the spatial conditions, the following works cannot be considered:

  • Sound works
  • VR and AR artworks
  • Video projections – with the exception of installations whose concept provides for a (semi-)enclosed space into which the projection can be viewed. The construction of this (semi-)enclosed space must be included in the project costs.

We encourage sustainable approaches in the creation, production and presentation of the work.

The total space available is approx. 75 m². The final selected work will be realized in collaboration with a scenographer.

Application
The application must be submitted by 09.09.2024 in German or English and contain the following information:

  • personal or artist group information (name, postal address, e-mail address, telephone number, short biography);
  • a short, but meaningful and well comprehensible project outline (concept and realization of the project incl. technical rider);
  • cost calculation for the realization of the project;
  • visual material in the form of renderings, photos, illustrations or video material (maximum of 5 images, 3 videos with a maximum length of 5 minutes each).

Applications should be submitted with the subject line “Application The Future is Today” to: cityofmediaarts@kultur.karlsruhe.de. Due to the file size, the application must be sent via download link.

Selection procedure
The selection is made by a jury of experts. The selection committee is made up of representatives from the fields of arts and culture, science and research. The decision is estimated to be made at the end of September 2024. All applicants will be notified of acceptance or rejection immediately after the decision has been made.
