A Mars mission in the middle of Karlsruhe.
For almost two weeks, a white dome becomes the habitat of Red Dust City. Three ZKM astronauts live there under simulated Mars conditions and test ideas developed together with artists, experts, and citizens: How do we organize living together? How do we stay healthy in extremely confined spaces? How do we manage food, water, and other resources?
The MARS! habitat is not open to visitors, but the mission can be followed live from the market square and online. On daily EVAs (Extra Vehicular Activities), the astronauts leave the habitat for outdoor missions. During discussion and communication hours, visitors can follow their work, ask questions, and get in touch with the crew. The livestream at the Ground Station in the Panolab at ZKM Karlsruhe (foyer) gives an overview of the astronauts’ condition inside the habitat: Is there still enough oxygen, food, and water? How is the mood? What mission are the three currently working on?
More information about the mission and the daily schedule here. At the start of the mission, the project website marsplatz.zkm.de will also offer ways to interact and follow the mission.
Long-term performance at Marktplatz Karlsruhe. Admission is free!
