[The Carnival of the Animals]
An XR experience about extinction will premiere on November 18, 2026, at the State Museum of Natural History in Karlsruhe.
Have you ever seen a Steller’s sea cow? The Stephens’ pipit? Or perhaps the quagga? Hardly, because they no longer exist – just like an estimated 100,000 other species that have been driven to extinction by humans. And the trend is rising. Only drawings and descriptions still tell us anything about these vanished, fantastical creatures – though they reveal even more about the dark nature of humankind.
Join us after the museum has closed for an exclusive tour of a secret exhibition at the Natural History Museum, guided by a special night guard. Pick up the Extended Reality Device and experience how the missing species come back to life before your very eyes for a brief moment. Our digital magnifying glass reveals what humans have been unable to see for hundreds of years.
This theatrical tour of the exhibition is accompanied by the famous music of Camille Saint-Saëns, newly arranged for the occasion, which has always symbolised biodiversity and takes on a new, poignant meaning in this context.
