Live coding as performance art of computer music and algorithmic dance music has been a tradition in Karlsruhe for many years – starting with the Institute for Music Informatics and Musicology at the HfM Karlsruhe, from which the internationally renowned live coding ensemble Benoit and the Mandelbrots originated and which in 2013 organised the international live. code.festival in 2013, to events, workshops and residencies at the ZKM, the TOPLAP Karlsruhe community, founded in 2022, which represents the Karlsruhe live coding scene virtually, in the city and beyond, as well as the Algoraves, which have been held regularly at the jubez Karlsruhe (stja) since 2015.

The International Conference on Live Coding (ICLC) is the annual meeting of the international live coding community and will take place in Utrecht for the first time in 2023, after a pandemic-related virtual edition in Chile in 2021. In addition to the local organising team in the Netherlands, the organising committee also consists of members of live coding communities from Ljubljana, Barcelona and Karlsruhe. This European community emerged from the intensive cooperation between the communities during the Creative Europe project “on-the-fly”, which ran from 2020 to 2022.
