The State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe (Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe) cultivates the classical artistic fields of painting and sculpture in their traditional and most advanced form. However, crossing media boundaries by artistic questions and formulations is part of contemporary art practice. On the one hand, artistic professors explore these boundaries of media in their artistic field and in their internationally esteemed work. On the other hand, open-mindedness towards digital possibilities in the fields of art today is cultivated in their mediation. Media-based art is a given part of teaching practice at the Academy and the manifold facets are applied by students and graduates in various ways. Also, the future teachers trained by the Academy transport an understanding of art that is open to new technology to schools and into public education. The newly introduced supplementary subject »Intermedial Design«, which was realized in cooperation with the architectural faculty of the technologically leading KIT will enable students to expand their artistic practice. It is a unique project in Germany that anchors media art in young people’s awareness.
