Temporary art installation “Flora Momentum” at Stephanplatz to become a permanent feature of Karlsruhe’s urban landscape

27. August 2025

The interactive art installation Flora Momentum, originally conceived as a temporary neighborhood project within the framework of Karlsruhe’s city transformation, will become a permanent part of Stephanplatz. After the funding period ends on August 31, 2025, the installation will be integrated into the public space. This has been made possible through the initiative of the Department of Cultural Affairs and the UNESCO City of Media Arts Office.

Since May 2025, Flora Momentum by the artist collective ato (Hannah Cooke, Jannik Lang, and Norina Quinte) has enriched Karlsruhe’s urban landscape. The kinetic lenticular images featuring motifs of medicinal plants such as turmeric, garlic, and ginkgo shift depending on the viewer’s perspective. Together with integrated seating and standing areas, they create an inclusive place for encounter and relaxation. The city administration draws a thoroughly positive conclusion: the installation has significantly enhanced the quality of stay around the Karl Pharmacy, provided fresh impulses for the city center, and fostered a tangible sense of community within the neighborhood.

Accompanied by workshops, performances, and events as part of the summer program, Flora Momentum quickly developed into a lively meeting point. In view of the strong public response, the city decided to secure the installation beyond the funding period. This continuation demonstrates how cultural initiatives and urban development can go hand in hand, contributing in the long term to the attractiveness of the city center.
