In its current season, the Digital Theater is portraying the life of the Fuchs family from Karlsruhe.
Soni lives with her parents and sister in a beautiful house at Kriegsstraße 120 in Karlsruhe. She has friends and enjoys playing football. Everything would be fine if it weren’t for the fact that it is 1934, the Nazis have been in power for a year, and have declared Jews to be the enemy. Soni and her family are Jewish, albeit not particularly religious. Soni’s father is in fact the well-known architect and composer Richard Fuchs, but even that does not protect them. With heavy hearts, they leave their homeland and flee to New Zealand. Yet the events in Germany catch up with them even from afar …
In this commissioned work, Lisa Sommerfeldt demonstrates her sensitivity towards this era of German history. Drawing on countless diary entries, archive records, photographs, and interviews with relatives, she transports us to Karlsruhe in the 1930s and recounts the Fuchs family’s gripping story.
The play celebrated its world premiere on September 24, 2026.
