The new season marks the 10th anniversary and celebrates its jubilee programme with a focus on debut films.
On 4th April 2016, after extensive restoration of the historic projector, a 35mm film print was shown for the first time. As a result, the semester programme is dedicated to debut films by various directors under the title All Beginnings Is Beautiful! The focus is on the working methods of filmmakers at the start of their careers, as well as the themes and cinematic techniques of their first works. While City Lights (1931) is not a debut film, it was the first public 35mm screening in April 2016 that inspired this series, and it will be shown again ten years later (on 10th April 2026, 20:00).
A special highlight of the summer semester is the seventh edition of the Open Air Cinema, which will take place from 12th to 22nd June 2026. This year, films such as Jean-Luc Godard’s debut À bout de souffle, George Miller’s Mad Max, and Jim Jarmusch’s Permanent Vacation will be screened. The programme will also include short films by HfG alumni, introductions, film discussions, guest screenings from other university groups, as well as regularly recurring special formats like Midnight Movies, Cult Sneak, and workshops on analogue film and cinema technology.
Admission to all events is free, thanks to the voluntary commitment of the non-profit cinema association and the support of HfG Karlsruhe.
