In 2022, Fahar Al-Salih created THE CAGE, a monumental installation of over 500 handcrafted birdcages. Together, they form a walk-in space measuring five meters in height and eight meters in length, which functions simultaneously as cage and temple, raising questions of freedom, memory, and belonging.
Al-Salih addresses experiences of freedom and limitation, migration, and exclusion. At the same time, he poses the fundamental and existential question of how we relate to the visible and invisible “cages” that shape our lives. The immersive installation engages in dialogue with the church space, inviting visitors to shift perspectives, reflect, and continuously experience the impact of the space in new ways.
THE CAGE serves as a collective resonance space for freedom, community, and connectedness.
