YouTube. Whether at home on the couch, on the train, or on a date—the new public television is always with us. Every minute, 500 hours of new videos are uploaded to this “open stage” of the internet, where they compete by any means necessary for the likes of an international and unforgiving audience.
Since YouTube went online in 2005, over 14 billion (sic!) self-made videos have been keeping us entertained and filling our inner void, painting an intimate picture of our world that ranges from funny cat videos to right-wing hate speech. It’s high time to create a play about this archive of modern humanity, through which we scroll together in the theater instead of alone on our cell phones this evening.
Three actors become a living reenactment of a mash-up of the past twenty years of YouTube, painting an entertaining and unsparing portrait of our society and its urge for self-expression.
