Kino im Blauen Salon, the student-run cinema of the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG), is kicking off the winter semester 2025/26 with a new program: The Archive Lives!
Under this title, the students are dedicating the season entirely to treasures from their own film archive. Since 2017, alongside regular screenings, the cinema has built up a small but rich collection – a treasure chamber of collective cinematic dreams, grown through donations, exchanges, rescues, and discoveries from around the world. Ever since the student team unearthed their very first 35mm print in 2017 – a Czech western with Italian subtitles – the cinema has pursued a clear idea: analog films don’t belong in storage, they belong on the big screen. Films come alive in the moment of projection. That’s why this semester’s program doesn’t just bring cinematic gems from the collection, but also short films spanning 30 years of HfG’s own film history back to life on screen.
In addition to these archival treasures, December will bring a cinematic highlight: a short film program dedicated to the works of the New Munich Group, a strand of New German Cinema largely forgotten by film history. And as always, plenty of specials are on the lineup this semester as well: cross-department HfG collaborations on exciting themes, double features, midnight movies, a silent film screening with live electronic soundtrack, and the jazzy open stage event Jazz in the Blue Salon.
And as always, admission is free – made possible thanks to the wonderful volunteer work of the cinema association and the HfG Karlsruhe.
