Success for Short Film Production “JANGU” in Locarno

12. August 2025

The award-winning film of the 1st Karlsruhe Media Arts Film Scholarship, JANGU (Director: Patience Nitumwesiga, Uganda 2022), will be screened at the prestigious international Locarno Film Festival. The Media Arts Film Scholarship, which has been awarded four times since 2021, supports independent filmmakers with limited financial resources by enabling them to produce a low-budget project worth €3,000. The selection of the film for the Locarno Festival—one of the most important festivals for international arthouse and short films—highlights the artistic quality and international relevance of the supported projects.

Two friends are robbed by their taxi driver during a boozy Friday night and suddenly find themselves on the street without money or a phone. Wearing uncomfortable high heels and light clothing, they decide to walk home, but the city streets at night are dangerous. Their last hope: a visit to a witch doctor who grants them a single wish.

They choose three hours without men in their city so they can return home safely. Their journey leads them through a portal into a parallel world free of men. But greed soon sets in: they extend the time and overlook the fatal consequences.

The Media Arts Film Scholarship is supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Karlsruhe within the framework of UNESCO City of Media Arts. The winners of the four editions can be viewed here.
