Scholarship for studio hö awarded to Chiharu Koda

14. March 2025

The media art scholarship for studio hö was awarded for the first time by the Hoepfner Foundation in cooperation with the UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts Karlsruhe. The scholarship, which is endowed with 10,000 euros, includes the use of studio hö as a work and exhibition space for a period of ten months. Applications were open to media artists who live and work in Karlsruhe and the surrounding region.

The jury chose Chiharu Koda, who sees studio hö as a creative hub that she would like to shape together with other artists. Her work creates spaces that combine intuition and technological innovation and invite people to reflect and interact.

‘Poetic depth and a gentle, curious exploration’
‘Chiharu Koda’s works are characterised by their poetic depth and a gentle, curious exploration of the connection between traditional sculptural materials, natural phenomena and innovative technologies. With remarkable sensitivity, she combines elements such as concrete, wood and ceramics with unconventional materials such as biological plastic made from agar-agar or insect shells, which she takes into a dynamic and contemporary dimension through the use of new media, generative sounds, augmented reality and mechanical elements,’ said the jury’s statement.

Chiharu Koda moved into the studios hö space on March 10 and will realise at least three media art exhibitions over the course of the fellowship. In addition, the space, which opened in September 2024, will continue to host events and workshops that promote exchange between art and society in Karlsruhe.
