On October 26, 2024, the Kino im Blauen Salon of the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe was awarded first place in the Cinema that looks back category of the Kinematheksverbund cinema prize. This award recognises the cinema’s commitment to film heritage, with a particular focus on classic formats such as 35mm and 16mm. The cinema sends out a strong signal for the preservation of analogue film material with regular screenings of archive prints and silent films as well as by supporting the Don’t Throw Film Away! and Save Film! initiatives.
Founded in 2016, the Kino im Blauen Salon has become a permanent institution at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe. With analogue and digital projectors and a CinemaScope screen, the high-quality technical auditorium offers an intense cinema experience in an intimate setting. The programme, coordinated democratically by the newly founded association Kino im Blauen Salon e.V., actively involves students and alumni and covers a broad spectrum from film classics to current productions, often accompanied by discussions and guest lectures.
A highlight of the coming months is the cinema’s participation in the Federal Congress of Municipal Cinemas, which will take place in Karlsruhe from December 6 to 8, 2024. On December 7, the Kino im Blauen Salon will host an informal get-together with short films, a live DJ and a bar area. The cinema also offers free screenings every fortnight during the semester.
