The blue wonder: Gaia in Karlsruhe

14. September 2024 — 06. October 2024

Gaia at W5 Belfast, 2019

This autumn, a seven-metres 3D replica of our Earth will impress many visitors in Karlsruhe’s Stadtkirche with its detailed and breathtaking depiction.

From September 14, the three-dimensional art installation Gaia by British artist Luke Jerram (*1974) can be admired in Karlsruhe’s Stadtkirche. In his sculptures, installations and live arts projects, the internationally renowned artist focuses primarily on humanity’s interaction with the Earth.

This is also the case in his travelling exhibit Gaia, in which Jerram uses detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface, providing the opportunity to see our planet, floating in three dimensions. The installation rotates once every four minutes – 360 times faster than in reality. The seven-metres 3D sphere, which will hang from the ceiling in the city church, illustrates the fragility of the Earth to visitors.

From September 14 to October 6, 2024, the art installation will be open to the public daily from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Karlsruhe’s Stadtkirche on Marktplatz, and will be complemented by a varied programme for all age groups.
