With Natural Flow by artist Jihye Jang, the Kinemathek Karlsruhe presents the first interactive light installation of the building’s new exterior lighting. With over 50,000 individually controllable pixels distributed across 16 LED panels, it is an impressive platform for media art in public spaces.
The Natural Flow installation consists of waves formed from countless light particles, metaphorically representing nature and its ecosystems. The interactive component of the work allows visitors to influence the direction of the waves through their presence. This makes it possible to visually experience the phenomenon of human influence on nature.
In her work, Jihye Jang addresses the phenomena influenced by humans, similar to how the flow of water varies in nature due to terrain, gravity, wind or other factors. In today’s society, humans have a greater influence on the environment than ever before. The installation encourages participants to reflect on the impact of this human influence on the environment and ecosystems. Through interactivity, visitors can actively influence the light waves by walking under the lighting.
The light installation will be on display for four weeks from 16 May 2024.
