As part of the new exhibition series zwischenräume the central atrium of the Städtische Gallerie Karlsruhe will be turned into a stage for an art installation where film, performance, architecture and said installation will fuse together starting on the 28th of July. Visitors will enter a world between reality and illusion, past and present.
In this exhibition curated by Stefanie Patruno visitors are invited to move through this setting. Different objects of wood textile, and ceramics scattered across like requisites of a theatre display Ulla von Brandenburgs intensive work with various traditions and customs. At the same time a wall will serve as a projection surface for the 16-mm-film of the same name It Has a Golden Sun and an Elderly Grey Moon. The film deals with reoccurring topics found in other works of the artist: Colours, rituals, movement, staircases, and textiles.
The use of colored fabrics, curtains, and costumes is, moreover, the narrative thread of the other eight films presented in the exhibition, which were made between 2009 and 2022. In this deliberate concentration on their cinematic work, away from any spatial staging through large-format textiles, the films in the exhibition link up in the sense of an overarching Gesamtkunstwerk to form a loose story with diverse references to literature and art history, anthropology and ritual actions.
The work of Ulla von Brandenburg refers to a series of historical references such as modern theatre, tableau vivant, folk tradition and to icons turned architecture. In interaction with song, dance and movement, elements as curtains, costumes, requisites and stage designs suggest a symbolic staging of ritualised actions und interpersonal encounters standing in the centre of the actors’ work.
