»From 1999 till 2005 I have been head of exhibitions at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe and could first hand experience how the institution became a hub for media art on a global level. The ZKM has been a pioneer in the field and since then has become one of the leading institutions in the field worldwide.

More and more IT companies and startups have settled in Karlsruhe in recent decades, and they too contribute to the creative, innovative developments that are to be perceived in the city. The radiance that the ZKM has been able to develop in the meanwhile 30 years of its existence in the city cannot be overlooked.

It’s a place to showcase current developments in art and technology, but also a place to engage with the pressing challenges of preservation and of our digital heritage. Together the the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design it is also a place for education, critical discourse and production of media arts.

Over the years, the ZKM has become an integral part of the city – inspiring it’s inhabitants. Current exhibitions such as »Open Codes« are unique in the world, inviting the audience to become an active part of the exhibition and to use and revitalize the museum as a place of exchange and communication, thinking together with experts about what it means to live in our digital worlds.

For me, Karlsruhe has long been one of the central cities for media art worldwide, and I wish that this would also be taken into account with the title of the UNESCO Creative City of Media Art.

The title will manifest the importance of media art for Karlsruhe and will help to further strengthen its global network.«
