Baden State Theatre Karlsruhe

Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (Baden State Theatre Karlsruhe) is one of the largest multidisciplinary theatres in Germany. With the divisions opera, ballet, concert, drama, »Volkstheater« and young theater and around 750 permanent employees from over 45 countries of origin, it reaches over 300,000 visitors per season in 1000 events. The Staatstheater considers itself to be an open theatre for an open society and works continuously to include all age groups, all members of society and foster intercultural exchange – in terms of programme, audience as well as staff.
In close cooperation with the ZKM, international partners such as the ars electronica center Linz and leading artists it was able to realize experimental media art projects such as »Stage Your City« (a collaboration with the network ETC, theatres in Tbilisi and Nancy, sponsored by Creative Europe) and the VR opera »Digital Freischütz«. Also, it was able to initiate the series »Opera and Media Art« with works such as »The Cunning Little Vixen« and »Turandot«.
Outlook:
In summer of 2019, as part of the Seasons of Media Arts the ZKM will be playing the LED wall at the Staatstheater. In September 2019 »Digital Freischütz« will be presented at the ars electronica Festival and in Bangkok, further international guest performances are in preparation. In autumn 2020, together with »Stage Your City«, the VR opera is invited to a media arts festival in Darmstadt. In January 2020 »Turandot« will premiere in cooperation with the famous Russian collective AES+F and opera houses in Palermo and Bologna, and a symposium on „Opera and Media Art“ will be held in cooperation with the ZKM.
