Summer of Culture in Karlsruhe: “Decentral.Diverse.Outside”

Under the motto Decentral. Diverse. Outside , the UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts Karlsruhe brings cultural life with all its facets “back” into the city. After months of cultural silence, visitors can look forward to a unique cultural program across all genres and categories during Karlsruhe’s first Summer of Culture , which the German Federal Cultural Foundation found so impressive that the City will receive 400,000 Euros funding from the Restart Culture program.

With theater performances and concerts, dance performances, exhibitions with media art and light art, and also music and smaller art projects in the city center and districts, visitors can stroll through the many facetted cultural life of Karlsruhe.

Under the auspices of the City of Media Arts bureau of the Culture Department, the Karlsruhe Marketing and Event GmbH, and the ZKM | Center for Art and Media as members of the Executive Board, a joint concept was formulated for the Summer of Culture in Karlsruhe and submitted to the German Federal Cultural Foundation for funding. More than 20 institutions and initiatives in Karlsruhe in the areas of art and culture, creative economy and the digital scene, as well as civic societies came together to send out a positive signal for the restart. Those involved include the Badisches Staatstheater, the City Initiative, the Jazz Club, the Jubez, the circus for children- and young adults Maccaroni, the Kulturring, the Karlsruhe City Youth Committee, and the Theater Night Association.

From June to September 2021 the city’s public spaces will host all manner of cultural events; there will be a theater tent in the Günther Klotz Park, interactive media art installations, a decentral Light Festival that complements the Schlosslichtspiele, a the shop window exhibition City Lights, live jazz combined with video art, the upgrade of the Out and About Festival program, and so on and so forth.

Now that the funding is secure, everyone involved will be able to develop and realize their contributions, especially those on which local freelance artists have set their sights.

“Thus, just a few weeks after the European Cultural Days, which took place exclusively online, an analog, decentral, and diverse Summer of Culture will begin that again demonstrates one of the particular strengths of the cultural City of Karlsruhe: its ability to collaborate across all categories and genres,” said Dr. Susanne Asche, Head of Karlsruhe’s Department of Cultural Affairs. The Summer of Culture relies on a strong network and partnerships, which have formed around the UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts.
