Call for Artists: City to City 2021 PLAY!

-

14 UNESCO Cities of Media Arts collaborate

Deadline for applications: June 30th, 2021

Following the successful launch of "City to City" in 2020, 14 Media Art city members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network - Austin (USA), Braga (Portugal), Cali (Colombia), Changsha (China), Dakar (Senegal), Enghien-les-Bains (France), Guadalajara (Mexico), Gwangju (South Korea), Karlsruhe (Germany), Kosice (Slovakia), Sapporo (Japan), Toronto (Canada), Viborg (Denmark) and York (Great Britain) - are once again joining forces to provide artists with a new opportunity for creative collaboration. Aim of the Open Call is to create a media artwork based on an online artistic collaboration between artists from different Media Art cities. The works will then be presented on various platforms (such as online galleries, festivals, exhibitions) in the participating cities.

The global pandemic has changed the way we live, work and perceive art and culture. For a year we have put our “normal” lives on hold due to COVID-19. We have experienced isolation and frustration, missing the playfulness of everyday human interaction. At the same time, the experience of lockdown has made us all more aware than ever before of what creativity and culture means to us, and what it means to lose these vital ways of relating to one another. But how can a peaceful coexistence succeed in the future?

In cooperation with the ZKM I Center for Art and Media, the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Karlsruhe invite artists from Karlsruhe to develop their visions for a digital artwork and to critically reflect on the following questions:

  • Can we imagine a fairer, more sustainable future?
  • Do we need a different understanding of nature and human coexistence?
  • Can we use our creative talents to reshape our cities, our social relationships and our society? Can technologies help us do this?
  • Where do the possibilities lie and where are the limits? What will happen when we press “Play”?

During the course of the project, the selected artists will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with experienced media art curators, discuss and present project ideas. Each participating artist will receive an honorarium or production grant of €2,000.00.

Artists applying in Karlsruhe must be able to demonstrate a connection to the city, such as living or working in Karlsruhe.

Completed applications for the Media Art City of Karlsruhe must be received by 2pm on Wednesday 30 June 2021. As this is an international project, only applications in English can be considered.
